If the invitation for your event indicates it is "black tie", you're going to want to dress appropriately. For women, there's a variety of different standards for how to dress. For men, the look is pretty straight forward: A tuxedo with a black bow tie and black vest or cummerbund. In reality, you're just choosing the jacket and pants for the look. For some style inspiration, here are some classic black tie looks available for purchase or rent.

Whether you're going to a wedding, a New Year's Eve event, or a charity gala, black tie is a simple option for guys. Though, if you're a rebel there are some acceptable black tie variations. Depending on the formality of the event, you may be able to wear a midnight blue tuxedo or a white dinner jacket (in the summer) for a black tie event as well.

There are even fewer options for a white tie event. Think White House inauguration gala. You should wear a black tails coat, black tuxedo pants, white pique bow tie and white vest. White gloves may also be required depending on how strict the attire adherence is.
