A Menswear Education Part 1: Tux or Suit?

The Difference Between a Suit and Tux

The first question most of our wedding couples ask (aside from the price of course!) is what's the difference between a suit or a tuxedo?

Well, the answer is pretty straight-forward. Satin.

Typically, a tuxedo's main feature is satin detailing on the lapel of the jacket. If it's a black tux, it probably also includes a satin stripe on the pant as well. If it's grey or navy, it usually doesn't. The buttons of the jacket are also usually covered. Below are some of our tuxedo options that clearly demonstrate the shiny lapels and the covered buttons on the jacket.

The satin doesn't always have to cover the entire lapel. The two options on the right provide a perfect example of smaller satin detailing. However, most two tone jackets do have full black satin lapels (*middle photo).

As usually is the case, there's always an exception to the rule. We do have several tuxedo options that use grosgrain fabric instead of satin. You can see the covered buttons (definitely a tuxedo) but no shine! This tuxedo is available in slate blue (**shown below) as well as charcoal grey, heather grey, cement grey and tan.

In contrast to the shiny lapels and covered buttons of a tux, a suit features bone or plastic buttons and satin-free lapels. Most suits have two buttons and feature a notch lapel. More modern options usually have some type of stitching on the lapel, but still no satin. The Heather Grey Clayton Suit shown below is a prime example of this. The extra stitching dresses up the suit without adding a shine that many brides are trying to avoid.

Suits have usually just as many color options as tuxedos, and many couples frequently choose to use suits for their wedding instead of tuxedos.

As far as the difference in price, a tuxedo and suit will cost the same as long as the fit, fabric, brand and color are the same (be it slim-fit, modern, or traditional). Just because it's a tux, doesn't mean it's more expensive; it's just more formal than the suit.
